Lexi the Blue Heelers Story

Lexi is a beautiful three year old Blue Heeler who presented to our clinic after horrifically being hit by car, suffering multiple pelvic fractures, internal bleeding and severe open wounds with large areas of devitalised skin.

Lexi was going to need intensive care, strong pain killing medication and surgery, and about a week’s stay in hospital before going home. Unfortunately Lexi’s owners requested euthanasia. We offered payment plans, Lort Smith or conservative options that carry some potential concerns (but still may work). Despite all these offers her owners were adamant they wanted Lexi euthanised.

Having a good chance of recovery with the right care, we gave one final offer. We proposed that Southern Animal Health and Forever Friends Animal Rescue (FFAR) work in combination to take care of Lexi, if they were happy to surrender her to be re-homed with a family who would be able to look after her in the future should illness or injury occur. They thank fully accepted our offer.

Forever Friends is an incredible organisation that rescues hundreds of animals every year that have been surrendered and would otherwise not pass usual welfare rehoming guidelines. FFAR sends many of these cases to SAH for our expertise and non-profit pricing to help these animals recover. In Lexi’s case SAH donated our professional time and expertise for her recovery and FFAR agreed to take on her case to find her eventual forever home.

Lexi has lived at SAH for the past week and after intensive care for the first three days and a major surgery for her skin and muscle deficits, this is Lexi today, walking around happily despite her fractures and injuries.

As fate would have it, Lexi found a home pretty quickly with one of our nurses. She became part of the furniture for a while at SAH and who can resist that beautiful smile! We’re all thrilled that she finally has her forever home.
